Disneyland Resort: the Anaheim local’s guide

Two parks, one resort

Disneyland Resort is made up of Disneyland Park (the classic castle park) and Disney California Adventure (Pixar, Marvel, Cars Land, and the nightly World of Color show). Most visitors buy a Park Hopper ticket, but if you only have one day, pick one park and commit. Park Hopper is best when you want to bounce between the two for dining, shows, or shorter lines.

Best rides and what to ride first

At Disneyland Park, head to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge first — Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run build long lines fast. Space Mountain, Indiana Jones Adventure, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad are the other must-dos. Over at California Adventure, Radiator Springs Racers, WEB SLINGERS, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, and Incredicoaster dominate the morning. Locals rope-drop the far back corners of either park while everyone else stops for castle photos.

Tickets, Genie+, and Lightning Lane

Buy tickets through Disney’s official app or website — third-party “discount” tickets are often scams. Genie+ lets you book Lightning Lane return times for many rides; it sells out on busy days, so purchase before 7am if you’re staying off-property. Individual Lightning Lane purchases are available for Rise of the Resistance and Radiator Springs Racers. Check the app constantly — return times and ride closures shift all day.

Parking and getting there

The main options are Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals parking structures, both connected to the parks by tram. Toy Story Parking Area off Harbor Blvd uses buses and is often faster to exit on busy nights. Many Anaheim Resort hotels are within walking distance and let you skip parking entirely. If you drive, arrive 60–90 minutes before opening to clear security and be at the gates for rope drop. Where to eat inside and outside the parks

Inside Disneyland, mobile-order quick service through the app to save time. Favorites include Bengal Barbecue skewers, Ronto Roasters, and the Monte Cristo at Blue Bayou. Disney California Adventure has Lamplight Lounge, Pym Test Kitchen, and excellent festival booths during Food & Wine. Downtown Disney sits between the parks and the parking structures, with restaurants like Naples Ristorante, Tortilla Jo’s, and Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen. Shows, parades, and fireworks

Entertainment schedules change by season. “Fantasmic!” on the Rivers of America, the “Magic Happens” parade, and nightly fireworks over Sleeping Beauty Castle are the headline acts. World of Color at California Adventure is a standing water-and-light show worth planning around. Check the Disney app the day of your visit — fireworks are sometimes canceled due to winds, and showtimes move with the seasons.

Practical tips locals actually use

• Arrive before “rope drop” — the first 90 minutes are the quietest.
• Midweek in January, February, and September historically have the lowest crowds.
• Pack a portable phone charger; the Disney app drains batteries fast.
• Bring a refillable water bottle; quick-service locations give free cups of ice water.
• Rider Switch lets one adult wait with a child while the other rides, then swap.
• Disneyland Hotel, Pixar Place Hotel, and Grand Californian offer early entry perks.
• Accessibility services and DAS return windows are handled at Guest Relations.

Disneyland vs. Knott’s Berry Farm

Disneyland is the full-day immersive experience: themed lands, character meet-and-greets, parades, and the biggest price tag in town.
